... that today is the birthday of San Francisco? In 1776,
Spanish missionaries began the first settlement in the area
that was to become the city of San Francisco. Yerba Buena was
the original name of San Francisco. It was taken from the
plant with the same name that grew around the settlement that
was adjacent to the Mission San Francisco de Asis, "Mission
Dolores."
