... that today is Poinsettia Day? This day celebrates the anniversary of the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, the man who
introduced this Christmas plant to the United States. He died
on December 12, 1851. Poinsett was the first Ambassador to
Mexico who brought the plant back to his plantation in the
U.S. He grew the plants in his Greenville, South Carolina,
plantation and gave them out as gifts to friends.

comic strip, Charlie Brown first attempts to kick a football.
The first appearance of the gag is in the strip from November
14, 1951. In that strip Violet, not Lucy, is the one holding the ball and she only pulls it away because she is afraid Charlie Brown will kick her hand. Lucy was first shown playing the prank on Charlie Brown on November 16, 1952. Help him out today by going out and kicking a football! ;-)

... that today is Slowest Marathon in History Day? In 1986, Vietnam veteran Bob Wieland finally crossed the finish line of the New York Marathon, just 4 days, 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 17 seconds after beginning. His was the slowest time ever for
a marathon. He was also the first person to run a marathon without legs. Wieland has completed six marathons on his hands. What an amazing inspiration!

... that today is Pass to Yourself Day? In 1997, Minnesota Viking quarterback Brad Johnson passed the ball, had it batted
back, caught it, and ran the ball into the end zone, thus becoming the first NFL quarterback to pass to himself for a touchdown. You definitely won't see a play like that every day!

... that today is the anniversary of the World's Largest Pizza? The world's largest pizza was built on October 11, 1987, by Lorenzo Amato and Louis Piancone. The pizza covered 10,000 square feet and measured 140 feet across. It weighed in at 44,457 pounds and was cut into 94,248 slices and eaten by more than 30,000 spectators in Havana, Florida. Yum!
